SmartAct Actuators break the mould when it comes to materials used.

At the Smart Actuator Company, we believe in using the best and most applicable materials for the manufacturing of our products. Have you ever wondered what materials SmartAct use and why? We put a lot of thought into our Innovative products and their material science. We decided to use some very modern manufacturing materials and processes to go with our Smart Technology Innovation.

SmartAct Medium 40 - 100 Nm Electric Actuator
Medium SmartAct Actuator

In doing this we ensure that our Actuators not only look amazing but perform amazingly too, accompanied with robustness and reliability while still delivering a massive 75% energy saving over other traditional electric actuators.

All our Actuators are located worldwide in very diverse Industrial complexes, so it is imperative that they can cope in a variety of climates and conditions.

Within these locations we ensure that our Actuators are Intrinsically Safe as directed by SIL Standards. We are currently Self-Certified to level 2 of 4.

Locations we have SmartAct Actuators performing in include: –

  • Sub Sea, Off Shore Rigs and Submerged Pipe lines
  • Food Processing sites
  • Waste Management sites
  • Water Purification systems
  • Zoos and Public attractions
  • Fire Suppression systems

The main body of our Small and Medium Actuators are moulded from a Nylon 66 compound, that is a cousin to the Kevlar compound which has similar properties to Mild Steel.

Nylon 66 has approximately 40% Glass Fibre content that gives it a structural stability and robustness.

This compound has been used for Aerospace projects, Military uses such as Armour Plating both for Vehicles and Personnel, and many more applications that require such strong compositions.

The benefits for using Nylon 66 are: –

SmartAct Small Actuator
  • Lighter in weight
  • Faster manufacturing time
  • No single use (Recyclable)
  • Extremely robust and durable
  • More cost effective
  • Corrosion free

The SmartAct Small Actuator Lid is moulded from Nylon 12, which has similar characteristics to Nylon 66.

The Small Actuator Lid design is translucent, as we want our customers to see the internal workings of the Actuator, it also helps when checking the relevant degree angle that the Actuator has turned. The Lid also has a Magnifying Glass built in to aid the Degree Angle view.

SmartAct Actuators use a series of internal Gears that produce the final output torque and drive. The exact design and how the gears are in position cannot be disclosed due to our patent. However, their composition can be explained, as the gears are self-lubricated and are made from Acetal which has a Molybdenum/PTFE make up.

The internal worm, worm wheel, centre gear, handle, internal walls and plates are made from Nylon 66, Delrin 500 or Acetal. Delrin 500 gives a good smooth surface structure and the Acetal gives extra stability whilst allowing some flexing in the Actuator movements.

The Benefits of using Acetal/Molybdenum/PTFE for Gears are: –

  • Self-Lubricating
  • Longer life cycle
  • Lighter in weight
  • Faster manufacturing times
  • More cost effective
  • Many colour options available
  • Corrosion free

Our customers don’t always just love our robust durable material science they also love how easy the SmartAct Actuators are to install and set up too.

Our latest Distributor appointed in India has just received their first consignment of Medium SmartAct Actuators and immediately responded with this testimonial: –

We have successfully tested one of 40Nm Actuator. It was an awesome experience for us to use this type of Smart Actuator for the first time and really its Smart as per the name and simple to operate” Smart material science and smart technology made simple keeps our customers happy.

Our Marketing Director was invited to be a keynote speaker at this years Family Business Conference in Canary Wharf. The subject of the conference was GRIT.

GRIT – Courage in the face of adversity. Tonya’s speech was all about facing challenges with GRIT. It was about her personal challenge in 2018 and how this affected the family & the business. She did an excellent job and we are extremely proud of her.

She ended on a high note talking about how through challenges a business can often not just survive but thrive.

At the end of 2018 we have a new feature rich Android App, a new product in manufacturing and plans for a great year in 2019.

Preparing for Sales of New Product – Small 0 – 40 Nm Smart Actuator

Preparing for Sales of New Product – Small 0 – 40 Nm Smart Actuator

We have been busy during 2018 preparing our latest product for its big Sales launch in 2019. Product development is always exciting.

This product was conceived just over 2 years ago and since then whilst also working on other projects we have had the opportunity to really do what we do best and innovate some fabulous new features into our small product.

We had always planned to create a small low torque smart electric actuator. From concept through prototyping to designing new features and an easy to use Android App all the work has been done in-house. Tooling then creation of the first run of products took place earlier this year ready for large production runs in 2019.  It has a rugged GRP housing and is provided with a 2 year warranty. It really has been very interesting and exciting for all involved to see their ideas come to life.

We are really happy with the final product and are sure all our customers will be too.

In preparation for its full sales launch we have published an article in the Autumn BVAA Magazine Valve User. We have updated and rewritten all our marketing information and created new user guides and documentation.

The small smart actuator delivers the same 75% energy saving all our products do making it the worlds most energy efficient smart small actuator.

A new Android based App has been developed during the development process for the small actuator which we have adapted to also work with the Medium 40 – 100 Nm Actuator.

This App is easily downloaded from the App store and provides easy setup and basic function setting as well as access to our advanced features.

Proud to win Judges Choice for Midland Region Family Business of 2017Tell us about your family business (What you do, how you started, who’s involved etc)
The Smart Actuator Company is an engineering manufacturing business. It is 6 years old but actually, we have had a lean manufacturing business in the IT Industry for 25 years so we had a great amount of 1st Generation & 2nd Generation experience in manufacturing & running a family business before we started this company. The Company is owned by father & son. I am the daughter & sister of these two. Our mother also works for the business and we hope to ensure some succession into 3rd generation as well.  We make Electric Actuators. Pretty much the worlds first truly smart electric spanner in a market of dumb ones. We all love working together and are very proud of the work we do together and the success of the company & the team.

What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
Our proudest moment was very recently in April this year being awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise in Innovation as well as of course being recognised as a family business. In fact, the Queens Award win is all the sweeter because we are a family business and proud to be. It is recognition that a seemingly small family business can really achieve great things. We have invested so much financially, time and effort into launching this venture and to gain such a prestigious accolade feels like recognition for all that hard work.

What do you love about being a family business?
We love being able to bring our family values into our work and business. We love working together as a unit. We love that the business will provide income for not just us but our children and also the team that work with us and their families too. As well as wanting to build a successful business we also create an environment which is a happy and caring place to work. We actually have family members that also work for us. One of our longest working staff members introduced her son into our workforce and he has proved to be an invaluable part of our production team. We work with people we know, like and trust and are very good at identifying skills shortages and supplementing those shortages with people who can help.  As a family, we have strong beliefs in supporting our community, social projects & environmental issues. Working within a family business means we can incorporate those values into our business as well. We have an internal environmental policy & do lots of work within the local community. 3 of the family hold various council positions. Our MD is a District Councillor.  We are also moving towards a large-scale social project in a developing country which we are very excited about.

ISO 9001:2015 Certificate for The Smart Actuator Company
ISO 9001:2015 Certificate for The Smart Actuator Company

We are pleased to announce that we received our ISO9001:2015 Certification. Quality Standards are so important for a business. We are proud to have the ISO9001 Certification upgraded to ISO9001:2015. Later this year myself and another staff member are taking part in the training to work towards the next level of certification.  Quality standards help to increases customer confidence in your organization as it shows you care for your customer business, and as in our case are committed to good quality standards of manufacturing & business practice.

Quality Standards help to improvement the credibility and image of your business – Because ISO 9001 is an internationally recognized standard, it has become the basis for creating a quality management system around the world, replacing many previously published requirements. When a company is looking for a supplier, it is often a requirement to have a QMS based on ISO 9001 in order to be considered. It is really important for us at The Smart Actuator Company to know that our customers can see we have this standard.

We want to improve our customer satisfaction – One of the quality management principles that are the foundation of the ISO 9001 requirements is to improve customer satisfaction by planning for and striving to meet customer requirements. Happy customers are exactly what we want.

Improve your evidence for decision making – We all make gut decisions in life but in business we need to work towards making more evidence based decisions. This is a professional process that is good for any business. Monitoring our internal processes means we can work towards constantly improving our use of resources and look at cost savings throughout the business.

Create a continual improvement culture – Continual improvement is a third quality management principle of ISO 9001. By adopting this culture to improve your processes and organizational output, you will find efficiencies and cost savings, including the use of systematic processes when problems occur in order to reduce the impact of the problem and increase the speed of recovery. By making this continual, improving year after year, the company can see continuing benefits from this.

Engagement of employees – Employees who are involved in the improvements of the processes they work with are happier and more engaged employees. Who better than the people working on the process to best identify the areas that need improvement, and to help to test and advance these improvements when they are implemented? Engaged employees are more productive and will help the company better improve and save, especially when they understand how the quality of the process depends on them.
